I have alot on my mind

But I'm not going to go into all of that here. At least not yet.

I do have one thing that's been nagging at me. I'm wondering how all you technologically advanced creatures handle this.

I've always prided myself on my photo albums. Since high school, I've developed pictures and put them in albums and wrote an index on those pictures. I did this all the way up to the summer of 2007, even developing pictures from my digital camera, which I finally got in 2006.

I love these albums and take comfort in the fact that someday my children and grandchildren (G-d willing) will show them to me in an effort to keep me stimulated in some way. Hopefully, this will not be in a nursing home. I think I would very much enjoy the albums at an advanced age of, say, 105.

But the albums have stopped filling up. My pictures are now stored on Snapfish, on Facebook and I probably have about 800 shots on the memory card of the camera itself. It will cost me a bundle to develop hard copies of these pictures and take me weeks to sort them and put them away.

What are you guys doing? Does anyone have and show real pictures anymore?

Just curious.

And by the way Haveil Havalim is up at Batya's. She has included a huge amount of articles about everything going on, including the Mumbai terrorist attack. So much to read, so little time.

I wish I could help. But all I've got is a shoebox full of photos and a couple of cheaply framed pictures of my kids propped up on bookshelves. Not a neatly arranged album in sight.

My mom picks out her faves, prints them out, and puts them in albums.

I did a great book of our trip to Israel using Shutterfly. It cost about $30, which was a lot cheaper than our wedding album and easier to view. But I remember spending a fair amount of time working on it.

Sometimes when I get a good deal from Shutterfly or Kodak Gallery, I make a bunch of prints of my kids. But it takes me a long time to get them in the album, which then takes up space in the office...

It is somewhat time consuming but: I go through the photographs choose which to print and the rest burn onto a CD (as a backup).

What QuietusLeo said. The CDs are a nice way to give out photo albums to the relevant recipients. Then THEY can print out the ones they like. See you tomorrow.

I try to make a point to print out pictures, but we really have to push. In the old days you printed and hoped that things came out well.

And now well, you know what happens now.

I am afraid every recent photo taken by myself or sent to me by other people is stored on my computer. Not a very sensible thing I must admit.

Ilanadavita: Get an external hard drive. Your photos still stay in one easy-to-store place; but if your computer crashes, you have a backup of those important memories. Also, your computer is happier and works better if you occasionally off-load a few megabytes. :-)

i have a shelf full of really great shutterfly albums. i love it. my kids love looking at "their" books and i feel like i'm making a chronicle of their lives.

i always wait until they have free shipping or some other sale.

what i'm bad about: formal portraits and also hanging pictures up in the house.

Ruti,

OMG!! You have become a computer geek!!

BACK-UP is key. Ask any college kid who has lost a term paper after they keyed in the final letter.

I go to the photo printing place every few months and print too many. I get the prepaid card so they'll be cheaper. And I put some in an old-fashioned album, no captions. We have thousands of pictures in a closet in envelopes, never albumed.

Most of the photo companies now do "books," and that's probably best. But shipping to Israel is high, isn't it?

We back ours up to an external drive. For a long while, I had photo guilt, too. Ezzie told me about Picasa, and it sorts pictures by date but also in a format where you can see every one.

Every year or so, I upload only the real keepers to Snapfish or Winkflash and make a few copies for relatives too. I try to put them into albums as soon as I can. When I was pregnant with my 15 month old, I sorted and compiled a bunch of albums. It really is nicer to have hard copies of pictures in albums to look at on a Shabbos or in general.

Don't do what I did this week and "experiment" with free backup software. It tried to re-format my external hard drive, which is now in the shop hoping I can recover my photos. I take so many pics, many of them aren't worth much more than one post, so I don't want to spend too much time saving them. But I had a few from Israel that I hadn't copied elsewhere! Yuck! I'll see how good my tech guy is at data recovery.

I just bought a couple (more) flash drive sticks. Those are really easy to use, and are cheap (you can sometimes get them for $10). I find they are quicker and easier to use than copying to CDs.

And throw some of your favorites up on Picasa and/or Flickr, just so they'll be somewhere.

forget the flash sticks. they're easy too lose.

and forget the free software. i use norton ghost, which saved me 2 weeks ago when i downloaded some spyware that i couldn't get rid of. i don't think i paid that much for it.
